Category: Breakfast, Side Dish
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 10–12 biscuits
Ingredients
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup salted butter
1 cup whole milk
How to Make Easy Homemade Biscuits
1. Freeze the Butter
Place the butter in the freezer for at least 20 minutes. Keeping the butter very cold is one of the keys to getting those flaky layers.
2. Prepare the Oven
Preheat your oven to 425°F. Position your oven rack on the third rack from the bottom. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray it with olive oil.
3. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Mix until well combined.
4. Grate the Butter
Using a box grater, grate the frozen butter directly into the flour mixture. Use a fork to gently toss the butter into the flour, making sure it is evenly distributed.
5. Add the Milk
Pour in the milk and stir with a fork until a dough begins to form. If needed, use your hands to gently incorporate any remaining flour.
6. Fold the Dough
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a 1 ½-inch-thick rectangle.
Fold the dough in half, then gently pat it back out. Repeat this folding process 6 times. This helps create those flaky layers without needing to knead the dough.
7. Cut the Biscuits
After folding, press the dough into a 1-inch-thick rectangle.
Using a 2 ½-inch biscuit cutter, press straight down to cut the biscuits. Do not twist the cutter. Twisting can seal the edges and prevent the biscuits from rising as well.
Gather the scraps, gently fold them together, and repeat until all the dough has been used.
Place the biscuits on your prepared baking sheet.
8. Bake
Bake for 13–16 minutes, or until the tops are lightly golden brown.
Serve warm with butter, honey, or your favorite jam.
Tips for the Best Biscuits
Keep the butter cold. Cold butter creates little pockets of steam as the biscuits bake, which helps give them their flaky texture.
Don't twist the biscuit cutter. Press straight down and lift. This helps the biscuits rise properly.
Fold the dough. The repeated folding creates those delicious flaky layers.
Don't overwork the dough. Handle it gently and only work it enough to bring everything together. Overworking the dough can make your biscuits tough instead of soft and tender.
What to Serve With Homemade Biscuits
These biscuits are delicious on their own, but there are so many ways to serve them.
Butter and honey
Homemade jam
Scrambled eggs and cheese
Bacon, egg, and cheese sandwiches
Sausage and gravy
Fried chicken
Breakfast-for-dinner
Soup or chili
Can I Make These Biscuits Ahead of Time?
Yes! You can prepare the dough, cut the biscuits, and keep them covered in the refrigerator until you're ready to bake them. Since the biscuits rely on cold butter for their flaky texture, keeping the dough chilled is especially helpful.
How Do I Store Leftover Biscuits?
Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
To reheat, warm them in a 300°F oven for a few minutes or microwave them briefly until warmed through.
A Simple Recipe That Became a Family Tradition
I love when the simplest recipes become the ones you make over and over again. These biscuits started as an easy way to put something homemade on the table, but they quickly became part of our family's everyday moments.
Whether you're making a big weekend breakfast, serving breakfast-for-dinner, or just want a warm biscuit with a little butter and honey, I hope these become a favorite in your home, too.
